Despite being condensed into neat identities of the Near East and Greece, these two titles cover a wide-ranging period of time, peoples, lands, and philosophies. Indeed, at first glance these peoples might have nothing in common except for their profound impact on our own world. In these comprehensive readings, however, we understand how all people struggled to define their relationship with their rulers, their gods, and their neighbors.

Peter Hoffmann assembles the words of citizens protesting the National Socialists’ dismantling of the first democratic German republic, socialists and conservatives arguing for civil liberties, and dissatisfied senior military officials.

The two world wars brought an end to a long-standing system of international commerce based on the gold standard. After the First World War, the weaknesses in the gold standard contributed to hyperinflation, the Great Depression, the rise of fascism, and ultimately World War II.
