Ice-locked to the Melville Peninsula, Igloolik lies west of Baffin Island. … The poems weave women’s igloo art, a community’s grief for teenage suicides, the immensity of landscape, and the tension between the Elder’s intuition and the outsiders’ science. Shifting between mythic tale-telling and the vibrancy of town life, these poems will speak to those for whom body, soul, and naming are not divisible.

The Winter Count by Dilys Leman (2014)

“Although relatively few First Nations joined the 1885 Métis insurgence, the Canadian government reacted punitively, instituting draconian ‘Indian’ policies whose ill-effects continue to resonate today. The Winter Count traces these developments alongside another narrative–the debate over the sanity of Métis leader Louis Riel. Dilys Leman weaves original poems and reconstituted archival texts, including medical reports, diaries, treaties, recipes, even a phrenological analysis, to create a montage that both presents and disrupts official history.”

Winter Sky: New and Selected Poems, 1968-2008 by Coleman Barks (2008)

…offers a selection from Barks’s seven previously published books combined with a group of new poems. This rich and varied volume moves from comedy to elegy, from lyric to narrative, in which individual characters are revealed and rendered symbolic by the stories that enclose them. What finally unites the poems of Elk in Winter is Pack’s desire to appeal to the ear as much as to the heart, and to discover and reveal the passionate music of ideas.”

Winter Amnesties by Elton Glaser (2000)

“The poems revisit the past, assess the present, and stare hard into the future. … They take a jaunty stance towards life and welcome whatever the days may bring, confident that, like crows in the harvest cornfield, we can live on ‘the shocks and waste of this world’ and ‘wring gold grain from the ruin.'”

When “the weather outside is frightful,” warm up with some winter poetry from the library’s eBook Collection.
