In the academic discipline of history, a primary source is an immediate, firsthand account of a topic. Historians often use letters, diaries, photographs, and audio as primary sources, as well as documents such as laws, newspapers, speeches, and census or other datasets.

Some primary sources are included in library databases (such as certain newspapers, photographs, and government documents) or published in books that the library can purchase, while others are held in museums and archives or in personal family collections. Most materials in archives have not been fully digitized, but the largest documentary institutions share millions of digitized materials online.

In the Library

Your best bet for finding primary sources in the library is to search your topic in OneSearch. You may find speeches, newspaper articles, photographs, and government documents in the various subscription databases, DVDs, and books that are cataloged there. You will need to critically evaluate the search results to determine which ones are primary sources for your purposes.

A small sampling of where to find primary sources in the stacks (second floor of the Learning Commons):

Chinese American voices: from the gold rush to the present

Online Collections

The Digital Public Library of America offers primary sources sets about important events, social movements, industries, and periods in U.S. history. These curate digitized sources from archives throughout the country. Sample sets: American Indian Boarding Schools, Women in the Civil War, Blackface Minstrelsy in Modern America, There is No Cure for Polio, The Panama Canal

The Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., is the largest library in the world. Its online catalog of prints and photographs includes 1.2 million images, and its digital collections share presidential papers; historical comics, maps, and music; as well as photographs and books.

The National Archives is the nation’s record keeper, preserving records that are important for legal and historical reasons. The National Archives’ website includes milestone documents from U.S. history, as well as a catalog that can be searched for military records, family histories, and historical topics. Researching in archives is a specialized skill; this guide to using the National Archives catalog is a good place to start.

The difference between an academic article, a journal, a database, and OneSearch.

Article

An article is a single scholarly work written by one or more authors.

Articles usually include:

Title

Author(s)

Abstract

Introduction

Methods

Results

Discussion

References

Examples:

A research study on climate change

A literature review about online learning

A case study in nursing

Journal

A journal is a publication that releases issues regularly (monthly, quarterly, annually, etc.).

A journal is similar to a magazine, and the articles are the individual stories inside it. Each journal issue contains multiple articles.

To locate an article on your topic with specific types of probability sampling methods, use a database on your subject or try a general OneSearch.

To get started, head to https://library.whatcom.edu/. Let’s select OneSearch.

In the search bar, type your topic (for example, anxiety) then use the boolean operator AND plus the type of data you are looking for. You might try systematic sampling, stratified sampling, or cluster sampling. Put quotation marks around words that you want to find together in the text.

Your search could look like this:

Click the magnifying glass to Search. When you see all the results, your search terms will be highlighted not just in the title but also throughout the abstract. Presence of the data sampling keywords in the abstract probably indicates that the article will be about the topic you chose rather than being an article about that data type.

Another type of search for data might include primary studies, or experiments performed by the author of the article. Check out this post, Finding specific data types and experiments in research for more tips on that type of search.

Sierra, a WCC student, recently asked a librarian about how to find an article “about anything human sexuality that involved an experiment BY the author; it can’t be the author writing about someone else’s paper.” Authors do plagiarize each other’s work sometimes, or sometimes they do their own analysis of someone else’s data.

There is a hierarchy of evidence in sources that you should understand. Here’s an image model that shows filtered information at the top (articles using outside data), then primary sources where the author did the experiment themself, and at the bottom where there was no design or humans.

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Medical_guide.png

You can use the type names of those layers when you search to get articles with experiments by the author. For example:

sexuality and “randomized controlled trial” articles in OneSearch

sexuality and “cohort study” articles in OneSearch

sexuality and “case control study” articles in OneSearch

You can see I put the type names in quotation marks so those words would appear together during the search. You can use that strategy in other health databases, too. Also, this isn’t guaranteed to be 100%, so definitely check the Methods section of the article to be sure it’s what you want!
