Google and Beyond

Search Engines provide a gateway to information on the World Wide Web. You've probably used one or more of the five most popular search engines: Google, Yahoo, Microsoft's Bing, Ask, and AOL. Google is by far the most popular search engine in the US (source: ComScore via, July 2010 data).

After completing this module, students will be able to:

  • Identify how search engines gather Web sites.
  • Identify the main difference between a search engine and a subject directory.
